Governor Greg Abbott has enough to deal with between now and Nov. 3, said attorney and insurance lobbyist Jay Thompson, Thompson, Coe, Cousins, when he addressed the Insurance Council of Texas Property and Casualty Symposium on Oct. 14. Thompson predicted that a new commissioner would be named after election day and before the 2021 legislative session begins on Jan. 12, partially driven by the senate confirmation process. Thompson explained that the appointee would take office immediately, but ultimately subject to senate confirmation, if appointed between legislative sessions; however, the appointee would have to wait for senate confirmation to assume duties if appointed while the legislature is in session.
